Tulane University & Uptown New Orleans After Katrina
There's significant wind and water damage to the Uptown Tulane Campus, but none of the buildings lost their structural integrity. Crews are working to restore flooded and wind-damaged areas to like-new conditions for Spring 2006's January 17, 2006 start date. For more information on this, including pictures and video, see here.
To the right of this picture are three security officers. Despite temptations, do not attempt to walk onto the campus unless you have been authorized and are attended by security.
We're all going to get through this, as long as we keep our sense of humor.
This antique store on Magazine shows just how powerful the winds got, while potted plants stand undisturbed across the street.
Construction crews are already getting to work in the Uptown, Downtown, and Lakeview areas. This house is on Tchoupitoulas. Note the blue FEMA tarp.
Just across the street, telephone poles are ready to be put up.
This giant is propped up by a branch. I have no idea if it's possible to get the tree verticle again, but I'm sure someone will try if they can.
Wind damage peeled off the side of this house.
These apartments got some storm damage, then were destroyed three days after Katrina by fire.
Nature's trash is to be set on the curb separately from other kinds to facilitate pick-up.
This house lost its roof completely.
Army jeeps carry soldiers from all around the country all around the city. (I took this after the jeep passed, because I thought the soldiers might not like having their picture taken.)
The Winn-Dixie, Wallgreeen's, and Save-A-Center on Tchoupitoulas are open, though with limited hours. The shelves, however, are full.
Even better, the PJ's next to Wallgreen's on Tchoupitoulas is now open, 7-till! (PJ's on campus and PJ's on Maple are not open.) Note that all open business have their Office of Public Health certificates posted.
This is the door to the Sport's Authority, which was looted after Katrina. The sign reads, "How Hiring - Apply Within." To see more signs, click here.
The #1 victim of Katrina Uptown is, the poor refrigerator. Not only did motors burn out from condensation, but the insides suffered the consequences of weeks of uncooled food. Because of the carnage, New Orleanians have been indulging their creativity in...
