Ruscher (2006) Ruscher, J. B. (2006).Stranded by Katrina: Past and present. Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy, 6, 1-6

As an introduction to the special journal issue on Hurricane Katrina, this paper relates critical concerns that arose in the immediate Katrina aftermath to the forms that those concerns have taken one year later. In line with the topics of the journal articles, these critical issues include poverty and racism, prosocial behavior, and the mental health crisis. The continued relevance of these issues are illustrated with the stranding of citizens in New Orleans after the levees broke, and one year later in their continued displacement as related to both public and private housing shortages.
