At the final exam, you will receive a short single experiment article to read.
With the exception of
question 9, the same exam questions are used each year. (Question 9 depends on the
particular results of the study, but always deals with the results section).
1.What are the dependent variables? What are the dependent variables at the
construct or theoretical level? How have they been operationalized? (Note that
my use of the plural is only for convenience. There may be one or more
dependent variables. You should note all of them).
2. What are the independent variables? What are the independent variables at
the construct or theoretical level? How have they been operationalized? (Note
that my use of the plural is only for convenience. There may be one or more
independent variables. You should note all of them).
3.State the hypothesis in your own words.
4. What is the design of this study? In answering this question, make sure you
clearly indicate how many independent variables are present, the number of
levels of each variable, and whether those variables are between or within
subjects variables.
5. What is meant by "the construct validity" of the dependent variable? In the
present study, did the author(s) attempt to assess the construct validity of the
dependent variable? If so, how. If not, how might this have been
accomplished?
6. What is meant by "the construct validity" of the independent variable? In the
present study, did the author(s) attempt to assess the construct validity of the
independent variable? If so, how. If not, how might this have been
accomplished?
7. Briefly comment on the internal validity of this study. Explain why it is good or
why it may have been compromised.
8. Briefly comment on the external validity of this study, making sure to keep at
mind at what level social psychologists want to generalize.
9. Examine the left-hand graph on page 384. Does there appear to be a two-
way interaction? Why or why not? What does the text say?
10. Are any other interactions significant? If yes, point them out. Are any main
effects significant? If so, point them out.
