Compiled by
Philip Phillips and Jeffrey P. Brain
Updated and revised by
Tristram R. Kidder
The original Lower Mississippi Survey (LMS) bibliography was compiled by Jeffrey P. Brain and Philip Phillips (Brain and Phillips 1979) for the Conference on Lower Mississippi Valley archaeology, held at Avery Island, Louisiana, in 1978. In its original format the bibliography was comprised of two parts: individual 3 x 5 file cards arranged alphabetically, and an author index, classified in general topical headings, and subdivided regionally.
As noted in the Preface to the first bibliography,
The emphasis... is upon archaeological and historical source material for the Lower Mississippi Valley, broadly considered substantively and geographically. Pertinent references to the natural environment have been included, with special attention to paleoecology, historical geology, and descriptive geography. Generally omitted are studies of modern climate, flora/fauna, soil surveys, and technical studies, such as MRC (flood control, levee construction) and oil company (prospecting, substructural geology) reports. Also not included are radio-carbon (sic) dates... general theoretical studies, or obituaries, although the bibliographies of the latter have been incorporated.
Other sources that contributed to this compilation were the various bibliographies of the LMS, the Tozzer Library [Harvard University] author and subject catalogue files, the bibliographies of major archaeological reports, and the contributions of individual participants in the conference. Existing state archaeological bibliographies (e.g., Davis and Scholtz, Thorne and Lewis, Newman and Simmons) were also drawn upon
In 1983 the bibliography was reissued as a "Supplemental Revision" of the original publication (Brain 1983). No change was made to the original format, with the exception that some references were annotated and new references were added to keep the bibliography current. Since 1983, however, no additions, changes, or modifications have been made to this document.
In 1996 we embarked on a long-term project to computerize the LMS files, including the bibliography. New tools are available to sort, search, and index computerized bibliographies, and this requires that the bibliography be issued once more, but in a new format. The current iteration of the LMS Bibliography is being placed on the World Wide Web as an experiment. Technology has made the dissemination of this information easy and rapid, and allows us to bypass the more time consuming and costly means of sending computer disks to users (and the attendant problems of hardware and software compatibility).
The bibliography was re-created using the reference data base application EndNote 2 (v. 2.3, for the technically inclined). This program has allowed us to create a consistent format throughout the document and to append to each reference a keyword or words (not yet completed at this time). In its disc form, the program is capable of reasonably sophisticated search functions, but these options are restricted in the published web version.
The present version is a beta test. We hope to expand the keyword listings significantly, so that references can be searched by more inclusive subjects (e.g., broad subject headings and/or larger geographic regions as in the original bibliography). The present keyword list is also awkward since it reflects subject headings taken from a number of sources. The bibliography has been updated by using a number of published sources, including written reports, articles, and monographs, as well as on-line and CD-ROM library databases. The proliferation of literature means that our coverage has both broadened and at the same time shrunk. We have expanded references dealing with the natural environment and geology, and have included a number of contract reports and historical references. In regards to the contract archaeological literature, however, our resources are woefully insufficient to keep up with the task of monitoring and compiling references. Our referencing of maps also is not comprehensive. We have done the best we can and once the existing bibliography is compiled, we can focus on keeping it current.
Our long-range plan is to keep the bibliography up-to-date through biannual releases. Some of our plans are, of course, dependent on user input. If you have ideas, suggestions, comments, or references that you want included please send me a message at (kidder@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu ).
This document is the result of the hard work and diligent labor of a number of people. My thanks go to Jeffrey Brain, Ian Brown, Philip Phillips, and Stephen Williams for all their research and support, and for their contributions to this work. Jeff and Phil deserve the bulk of any credit for this work, and cannot be held accountable for any failures of this version of their bibliography. The tedious task of data input and editing of references was performed by Jeb Card, Daniel Stauber, and Samuel Trachtenberg. Jason McBrayer made the computerization possible and has masterfully handled the transition from paper to disc to web.
Notes on the current index format.
The keyword categories listed in this version of the LMS bibliography are drawn from a wide range of sources, including those used by other referencing sources (usually online references). The resulting keyword list is very long and contains a number of keywords that are of dubious value or utility. We have not had the time to edit the keywords, although we plan to do so in the near future. Users will note that the keyword list is not always consistent. For example, one can search for references to the De Soto expedition under, De Soto, Hernando, or Soto, Hernando de. The keywords listed in the published version (Brain 1983) have not been used (although we plan to incorporate these inclusive search terms in the near future). Most of the keywords used in our list are intuitive (i.e., site name, county or parish, culture term, etc.). The complete keyword list is presented below. Readers can search the bibliography under these keywords. The bibliography is also searchable by author and title. Subject words can be searched but will only be retrieved if the word is in the title field.
