Keywords

Before you begin your search, break your topic down into several discrete concepts or keyword search terms. Databases, including the library catalog, will be able to retrieve more relevant materials this way. For more flexible searching, think of various ways to express these search terms -- synonyms, broader terms, and narrower terms. Most databases index or categorize content in English; however, titles may be in another language. Don't forget, where appropriate to include search terms in Spanish or other languages.

Then, think about what kind of information resources you need and select appropriate indexes and databases in which to search for material. This step is crucial to efficient identification of quality sources for your research.

Using Subject Headings as Keywords

Although browsing the subject headings is a great way to effectively assess a library's holdings on a given topic, subject headings can also be used in keyword searches. Searching this way can enhance your results. See the example below:

Finding Materials in Anthologies

Materials on, about or by Chicanos frequently appear in anthologies. These works will have subject headings but will not contain subject headings for each author in the anthology. As a result, you will have greater success if you do keyword searches. For example, although "Aztlán" is a subject heading, you will find many more results by doing a keyword search. Likewise, Rodolpho Gonzales is frequently referred to as "Corky" and his first name is (more accurately) spelled as "Rodolfo." A keyword search for "Corky Gonzales" or "Rodolfo Gonzales" finds more results.
