School Presentation Proposal
To
the Science Teachers of _________ H.S.,
We
are graduate students at Tulane University, working under
the supervision of Dr. Lee Dyer. Our research topics are
diverse, but are linked by common interests in insect
ecology and interactions between insects and plants. We
would like to share our interests in ecology with younger
students and help make science more dynamic to them by
bringing a multi-media presentation to your biology class.
We
have presentations centered on insects that include a
PowerPoint presentation (providing a brief overview and
interesting facts about each insect group), two display
cases of pinned insect specimens, and various live specimens
(mostly caterpillars). We would like to give the talk, show
the animals to the students, and have a question and answer
session at the end to engage students in current and
relevant science.
The
content and organization of our talk can be tailored to
requirements fitting your science curriculum. If you would
like us to visit your students, please let us know how many
classes and for what time period you would like us to share
our activities. Also, if you have a specific curriculum
that we might be able to tailor our presentation to, please
let us know. We can give the presentation when it would be
most appropriate for you and your classes. All that we
would need from the classroom is a spare table or two to
place specimen cases and live insect containers for display,
an open outlet for a computer and projector (for the
PowerPoint presentation), and a screen to project the
presentation onto for the class to view.
We
would like to extend this outreach by enabling students to
experience science research at the university level. At the
end of the presentation, we would like to ask the students
if any would be interested in volunteering to spend a day as
an assistant in our laboratory at Tulane or as an assistant
in an ongoing field project collecting insects around
Louisiana. This would allow for dynamic, real-life
engagement in science that will hopefully instill a greater
interest for the subject in your students.

School Presentation Proposal

We

multiple classes and age levels involved). Also, if you

our presentation to, please let us know. We can give the
presentation when it would be most appropriate for you and
your class.
The
PowerPoint presentation and activities involving the live
and preserved specimens can be tailored to any age level.
The entire presentation would be designed to involve younger
students in nature and science using the combination of an
entertaining and informative background talk on insects with
engaging hands-on activities. We can include Q & A
sessions and discussions on various topics, depending on the
age of our audience. All that we would need from the
classroom is a spare table or two to place specimen cases
and live insect containers for display, an open outlet for a
computer and projector (for the PowerPoint presentation),
and a screen to project the presentation onto for the class
to view.
