2008 - 2009 FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT INFORMATION

FOR NEWCOMB-TULANE COLLEGE STUDENTS WHOSE INITIAL ENROLLMENT AT TULANE WAS

PRIOR TO FALL 2006

The foreign language requirement for students whose initial enrollment at Tulane was PRIOR TO FALL 2006 is a proficiency requirement and may be satisfied either by completing a foreign language course at the 203 level or by testing. If you will be completing the requirement through course work, the foreign language department in which you choose to study will determine your placement level on the basis of the online placement information questionnaire, your high school performance, and the results, if any, of the foreign language achievement tests which you may have taken. If you have a qualifying score on a language test (SAT II 640 or higher, AP 4 or 5, Higher Level IB 5 or above), you will be exempt from Tulane’s foreign language proficiency requirement. If you are placed in the 203 level and wish to seek exemption from the foreign language proficiency requirement, you may take an optional language exam. Please contact the Language Learning Center office for information about scheduling this exam. Regardless of your exempt or possible exempt status, you must complete and submit the online form.

f you are fluent in a language not offered for proficiency at Tulane and wish to fulfill your requirement in that language, you must complete and submit the online form.  The Language Learning Center will then contact you with further information.

If you wish to register for a foreign language that you have not previously studied, complete and submit the online form, indicating the language you have selected. You will then be placed in a beginning course in the foreign language you have chosen.

ALL students who wish to enroll in a foreign language course must complete and submit the online placement form in order to receive an official departmental placement. This includes students in schools that do not have a language proficiency requirement and students who have already completed their requirement and wish to study another language.
