Dance
card for the
Mystic Krewe of Comus Ball, 1887
Theme: Homer's Odyssey

Comus did not parade between 1884 and 1899. Instead, it lent financial
support to building new quarters for the Pickwick Club on Canal Street.
Most of the old-line Carnival krewes are aligned with social clubs.
While krewe membership is secret, membership in the social club is not,
and the clubs therefore serve as a public face for the krewes.
Even though Comus did not parade during these years, it still held
lavish balls. Dance cards listed the order of dances and probably came
with a small pencil attached for reserving a dance for a specific
gentleman.
