Designer, C. Bonnecaze
watercolor float design, 1885
Float Title: Proteus
Procession of Proteus
Theme: Myths and Worships of the Chinese

This watercolor float design is for the Krewe of Proteus from 1885. The
designer, Carlotta Bonnecaze, was the first woman and the first Creole to
design floats and costumes for krewes.
According to historian Henri Schindler, Bonnecaze "was the most
elusive of Carnival artists, and the one most devoted to the
fantastic." To Schindler's eye, her strengths were theology and
whimsy, and other themes for which she designed were Visions of Others
Worlds, The Hindoo Heavens, Dumb Society, and Asgard and the Gods.
