The Krewe of Proteus formed in 1881 and held its debut parade and ball in 1882. Proteus was a Greek sea god who possessed the power to assume any shape, but most often preferred the shape of a hunchback.

Main Entry: pro·te·an
Pronunciation: 'prO-tE-&n, prO-'tE-
Function: adjective
Date: 1598
1 : of or resembling Proteus in having a varied nature or ability to assume different forms
2 : displaying great diversity or variety : VERSATILE

Members chose "Ancient Egyptian Theology" as their inaugural theme partly to compete with the visually elaborate and artistic floats of Comus. This watercolor float design recreates a Phoenix arising reborn from the hot ashes to represent resurrection.
