Hanley, New Orleans colon-rectal surgeon, Professor of Surgery at the Tulane Medical School, and Chair of the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Ochsner Clinic. Also school papers pertaining to Dr. Jeanne C. Roeling Hanley (wife).

Source of acquistion: Jeanne Hanley Rabig (daughter) donated her parent's papers to the Tulane Manuscripts Department in 1994.

Biographical sketch

Patrick H. Hanley was born in Lockport, Louisiana, in 1909. He graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1929 and the Tulane University School of Medicine in 1933.

During World War II, Hanley served as a lieutenant commander in Bahia, Brazil, where he devoted himself to disease prevention and health education. After the war he returned to New Orleans, eventually rising to the position of Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Tulane School of Medicine and Emeritus Chair of the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Ochsner Clinic.

From 1970-75 he served on the Board of Visitors of Tulane University. In 1974 Hanley served as President of the Tulane Alumni Association. He received numerous awards, including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Award for his pioneering work in audio-visual programming as a medical teaching tool.

His wife, Jeanne Roeling Hanley, was also a physician. They had one daughter, Jeanne Hanley Rabig. Biographical information on Hanley and the Hanley family is located in Box 1, folders 1-3.
