The Tulane Manuscripts Department makes a special effort to preserve the
literary heritage of our region. Among its voluminous holdings of the
papers of writers and the records of literary organizations are the
following:

- Augustin, Wogan, Labranche Family Papers, 1803-1969 (bulk
1842-1936), 1 lin. ft., Manuscripts Collection 223. A collection of
family papers, primarily of the Augustin family in Santiago, Cuba
1803-1809 and in New Orleans 1842-1923, with notes and papers of the
Wogan family. A section is devoted to the writings of Louisiana
author Jeanne Wogan Arguedas, who wrote Creole poems, stories
and songs under the pen name, Anne Labranche.

144. Correspondence, articles, and poetry of a New Orlean's native
and Newcomb College graduate who wrote largely for the Christian
Science Publishing Society and the United Methodist Publishers.

- Bradford, Roark 1896-1948, Papers 1930-1949, 4.5 linear
feet, Manuscripts Collection 20. Letters, papers, clippings and
notes of New Orleans author specializing in
African-American folk dialect.

- Burman, Ben Lucien
1896-1984, and Burman, Alice Caddy 1896-1977, Papers, ca. 1927-1984,
40 linear feet. Correspondence, articles, book drafts, scrapbooks,
photographs, sketches, and other papers documenting this Southern
husband and wife, novelist/artist team. They were most famous for
their "Catfish Bend" satires. Ben Lucien Burman also
achieved fame as a North African-based journalist during
World War II, where his exposes of the Vichy regime earned him
the Legion of Honor.

22,290 items, including 7 volumes, Manuscripts Collection 2.
Letters, letterbooks, diaries, manuscripts, notebooks,
organizational records, business papers, photographs, clippings and
other printed materials pertaining to Cable's career, public works,
and personal life. See inventory for more information.
- Claudel Family Papers,
1817-1988, 14 linear feet, Manuscripts Collection 862. Papers of New
Orleans born Alice Moser Clauder (1914-1982), poet and teacher; her
husband, Clavin Andre Claude (1910-1988), folklorist and teacher;
her grandfather, Thomas Hayes, and her son, William Rivera.
- Deutsch, Hermann Bacher
1889-1970, Papers 1827-1970 (bulk 1920-1970), 22 linear feet, Manuscripts
Collection 130. New Orleans author and journalist.
Includes articles written for New Orleans Item and New
Orleans States, research materials for his books The
Incredible Yankee and the Huey Long Murder Case, and
biographical material. See finding aid for further information.

Harrison Papers, [1917-1918], 6 typescript items. Writings of
Elizabeth Binford, journalist and writer of children's stories. Two
of the stories were published in book form: A Peddler of Dreams
about Edgar Allan Poe and The Little Boy of Good Children Street

- Hearn Lafcadio,, LA and Japan author, 50 items, including 1
manuscript (1886-1901)
- Hutson, Ethel, LA artist,
journalist and suffragist, 3,714 items (1908-1922). Pertains
primarily to her career as a journalist and her interest in women's
suffrage.
- Kane, Harnett, LA author, 3 manuscripts (1946-1957)
- Keyes, Frances Parkinson 1885-1970, Papers 1940-1970, 201
pieces, Manuscripts Collection 872. Correspondence between Keyes and
Eugene Pendleton Hogan and the Keyes Foundation and Mr. Hogan, a
board member.
- Keyes, Frances Parkinson 1885-1970, Papers 1898-1970, 36
linear feet, Manuscripts Collection 842. Biographical information,
family and business correspondence, galley proofs, manuscripts, and
articles (mainly after 1958) of the New Hampshire-born author who
became a New Orleans resident. See inventory for more information.

- King, R. Richardson, "The Life and Times of Grace
King," 1965, 1 typescript (23 pages). M 1012. Paper presented
to Le Petit Salon February 21, 1985 by R. Richardson King,
grandnephew of Grace King (1852-1932), the New Orleans author and
found of Le Petit Salon, a literary and social women's club of New
Orleans.
- Kirk, Richard Ray (d. 1951) Papers, 1924-1951 (bulk
1925-1926) .5 lin. ft. Manuscripts Collection 882. Mostly poems of
author and poet Richard R. Kirk, Tulane professor from 1921 to 1937
and 1946-1947.
- Lanier, Sidney, GA poet, 75 items (1875-1886)
- Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth, 1807-1882, letter, M1108,
January 6, 1881, 1 leaf. Letter from Longfellow to Mrs. Childs
thanking her for a Christmas present and extending New Years
wishes. Removed from The Song of Hiawatha in the Frank M.
Besthoff Collection
- Martinez, Raymond J., Papers 1928-1958, 1,069 pieces,
Manuscripts Collection 103. Martinez served as business manager for
Arts and Antiques and Arts, Industries and Southern Opinion
magazines.
- Rolfe, W.J. Correspondence 1880-1893, 1935; 31 pieces.
Manuscripts Collection 490. Letters to Rolfe from outstanding
literary figures, including F.J. Furnivall, J.L. Halliwell-Phillipps,
H.H. Furness, and Mary Cowden-Clarke about their own and Rolfe's
literary work. The majority of the items fall between 1884 and 1893
and are letters Rolfe wrote to Miss Eleanore R. Larrison, discussing
her work and the progress of his own. One describes the Martha's Vineyards
Summer Institute.
- Adrien
Emmanuel Rouquette Papers, Manuscripts Collections 267,
Rouquette, Adrien Emmanuel 1813-1887, papers 1842-1942 (bulk
1850s-1880s), .5 linear feet (one manuscripts box). Letters poems,
articles, clippings and other documents pertaining to Adrien
Rouquette, New Orleans-born priest,
poet, and missionary who worked among the Choctaw Indians. The
Choctaws gave him the name "Chahta-Ima." Also includes
papers of his biographer, Dagmar R. Lebreton. Correspondents include
Orestes Brownson, Abbé Perché, Monseigneur Blanc, John Dimitry,
and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Mainly typed transcripts and
translations. French and English.
- Rouqhette, Francois Dominique, LA poet, 16 items, including
4 volumes (1850, n.d.)
- Saxon, Lyle, LA author, 3,389 items, including 10 volumes
(1879-1946)
- Scott, Walter, Sir, 1771-1832, letter, M 1107. August 26,
1825, 1 leaf. Letter from Scott to My Dear Hamilton. Also
includes newspaper clipping about the collectors value of Scott
books in 1930. Removed from Chronicles of the Canongate,
Frank M. Besthoff Collection.
- Robert Southey letters, 1833-1929. 8 items on ten leaves, M
1104. Five letters and one autograph manuscript of Robert Southey
(1774-1843), poet laureate of Great Britain. Correspondence includes
letters to a brother, his printer, and one about a personal dispute.
In addition to the above, this collection includes two letters
removed from the Southey book collection: Christina G. Rossetti,
17 April 1893, and William Ellery Leonard, 17 January 1929.
- Robert Southey to Robert Lovell, April 5, 1794; 1 leaf, M
1105. Drafts of five unpublished poems; two may have been early
versions of poems published later.
- Stuart, Ruth McEnery 1856-1917, Papers 1893-1917. 140
pieces, Manuscripts Collection 139. Letters to Drs. C. Augusta and
Emily F. Pope of Boston, Mass., George W. Cable, and to family and
friends. Also includes notes and memoranda, programs of readings
from her works, press notices, and clippings. Literary works by
Stuart in this collection include "To her Crazy Quilt. A Study
of Values," a typescript/manuscript of "The Final Triumph
of Jeremiah Prophet Elijah," corrected typescripts of
"Sonny's Diploma," "The Luck of Batture Baptiste,"
typescripts of "An Old Time Christmas Gift," "Chosen
Few" and some manuscripts and typewritten poetry.
- Stuart, Ruth McEnery, 1856-1917. 1913, 6 items, M1106. Six
ink and watercolor sketches by George Henry Clements, c. 1913,
created to illustrate Daddy Do-Funnys Wisdom Jingles by
Ruth McEnery Stuart, 1913.
- Toole, John Kennedy
1937-1969, Collection 1930-1989, 10 linear feet, Manuscripts
Collection 740. Correspondence, literary manuscripts, photographs,
scrapbooks, and family papers pertaining to New Orleans author John
Kennedy Toole. Toole was posthumously award the Pulitzer Prize for
Fiction in 1981 for A Confederacy of Dunces. His mother,
Thelma Ducoing Toole, and Walker Percy were instrumental in having
his book published by LSU Press twelve years after his death.
Toole's other book, The Neon Bible, was published in 1989.
- Woods, William Sledge 1910-1980, Papers 1955-1961, 43
pieces. Manuscripts Collection 778. Correspondence of a Tulane
University professor of French, three drafts of his translation of
Boccaccio's Teseida, and morpheme cards of the Italian text.
- Townsend, Mary Ashley, LA author, 909 items, including 1
manuscript (1850-1911)
- The Beyle Family
Papers, 373 items (1618-1913), contains information regarding
Stendhal.
