The guidelines mentioned in the "How to use Special Collections holdings" section on the Home Page apply to materials in the Manuscripts Department.

In addition to those regulations, the following use rules apply:

Please observe a "one box, one folder" rule.

Have only one box of documents at a time on your table. Place the box to the side of the table so the Reading Room Supervisor has an unobstructed view of your work area. Remove only one file folder from that box at at time. Replace the folder you were using before removing the next one, making sure to maintain the original order of the folders in the box.

Keep documents flat on the table
When reading documents, leave them flat on the table, in their file folders, and in the order in which you found them. Do not hold documents while reading them, remove them from their file folders, or change the order of documents within the file folders. Be particularly careful not to lean on, write on, or place any objects, such as writing paper or note cards, on top of the documents.

Photocopying
Because photocopying damages documents, we generally restrict it to occasions when a researcher can demonstrate that note-taking alone will not provide all of the information needed. To minimize damage to the documents we protect, we also limit the number of photocopies per patron.

All photocopying is done by department staff for researchers; there is no self-service photocopying. If you are likely to request photocopying, please ask the Reading Room Supervisor for instructions. Do not remove from their file folders items to be photocopied. Please pay for all photocopies in advance.

Please make a good-faith effort to take notes before requesting a photocopy of a document.

Many of the documents we preserve cannot be photocopied because of their fragility or legal restrictions.

Therefore, obtain approval for photocopying in advance and on a document-by-document basis.

Receipt of photocopies does not convey copyright.
