Technical notes about the Tulane Special
Collections Web Site
|
This site relies
heavily on "nested tables," or tables within tables. |
|
Cell color or cell background image tags associated with these tables
may not display as intended in Netscape 3.01; however, this should not
be noticeable and will not affect the site's readability. All such tags
display properly in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 - 6, Netscape 4.0+. |
Uses of proprietary tags:
| Font tags that
refer to the "Georgia" and "Verdana" fonts. |
| These fonts were specifically designed for easy readability
on web pages and are automatically installed on your computer with
Microsoft Internet Explorer or Microsoft Office programs. Most text in smaller sizes is intended to be viewed
in Verdana for readability. If you do not have the Verdana font on your
computer, your browser will search for Arial, then Helvetica. Lacking those, the text will automatically display in your default font. |
| Several minor
uses of the Microsoft Internet Explorer "Marquee" tag. |
| This will display as normal text in Netscape. |
| Two
instances of the
Microsoft Internet Explorer "background sound" tag (<BGSOUND>). |
| This is on the Jazz Archives home page and will automatically play jazz music whenever
you surf there, but only if you open the page
using the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. If you do not use Microsoft
Internet Explorer, you may hear the music in the Jazz Archives section
by selecting the audio link. |

C. Miller, Manuscripts Librarian, Howard-Tilton Memorial Library,
Tulane University, has had sole responsibility for all pages on the Tulane
University Special Collections web site since May of 1995. However, its
original iteration was created jointly by Lee and Jed Diem, Tulane's
Director of Academic Computing. Lee developed the concept and acted as
general editor for the first version of the site, including:
-
choosing and editing the text
-
selecting the illustrations
-
creating the overall design and navigational structure
-
and creating the first drafts of the HTML files
Jed took Lee's HTML files and created a finished product. That included:
-
putting the files on the university computing system
-
overseeing the scanning of the images
-
placing the images in the pages
-
polishing the HTML codes
-
creating the hyperlinks
-
making sure everything worked
-
and adding his own inimitable editorial and artistic touches.
Jed's enthusiasm and expertise gave this web site a level of technical
sophistication not originally envisioned by the project's creator. He deserves
full co-author credit for its original version and implementation. |
