Search our Vertical Files!

Special Collections is pleased to announce an online search tool for our extensive vertical files. Our vertical file collection preserves Louisiana flyers, brochures, menus, and other small printed items going back to the very early 19th-century and covering almost almost every aspect of Louisiana society and culture.

Welcome to our home on the Internet.
Here you will find information about Howard-Tilton Memorial Library's Special Collections Division, which preserves the library's rare or unique holdings. The division's six department's are:

  • University Archives

  • Jazz Archives

  • Rare Books

  • Louisiana Research Collection, and

  • Southeastern Architectural Archives

As one of Louisiana's major cultural resources, Special Collections is Tulane University's greatest link with the research community and we welcome a parade of scholars from around the world. However, we most enjoy helping students benefit from the international cultural treasures we preserve. We look forward to welcoming you soon to Special Collections.

Architectural Archives University Archives
A research archives for studying the built environment of Louisiana, the architectural archives preserves primarily New Orleans architectural office records from 1830 to the present. The Tulane University Archives preserves the official records of Tulane University. It includes administrative records, theses and dissertations, catalogs, student publications, and images.
Jazz Archives Rare Books
The Hogan Jazz Archive preserves oral histories, music, photographs, sheet music, clippings, sound recordings, and other materials about Jazz in America. It focuses primarily on the New Orleans style. Rare Books has some 50,000 titles dating from a leaf of the Gutenberg Bible (ca. 1456) to recent first editions.
Louisiana Research Collection
The Louisiana Research Collection (LaRC) is the most comprehensive and possibly largest research library and archives for New Orleans and possibly the second largest for Louisiana as a whole. LaRC provides a full range of library and archival research resources for studying Louisiana, from books and manuscripts to maps and images.
