Our University Archives preserves the official copies of Tulane's senior honors theses, master's theses, and doctoral dissertations.

A department of the Tulane Libraries Special Collections Division, the Tulane University Archives is located on the second floor of Jones Hall.

How do you find a thesis or dissertation?

All Tulane theses and dissertations are cataloged. Therefore, you may search for them in the library's online cataloging system, Tulanet Voyager.

Important!!

A digital library of most Tulane Ph. D. dissertations since 1956 is available online.  Many can be downloaded into your personal computer.

For example, to find a recent thesis or dissertation in a specific field, do the following:

  • In "Library Catalog," select the "KEYWORD" search option.
  • Enter the following:Tulane  thesis M.A. department name

This will give you all cataloged Tulane Arts and Humanities Masters theses that were accepted by the Tulane academic department you specified.

For Science Masters theses, use “M.S.”, and for Honors theses, use “B.A.” or “B.S” in your search term.

Once you have found a record for a thesis or dissertation, how do you request to see it?
To request a thesis or dissertation, please fill out a request slip at the front desk in room 202 with the following information:
  1. TYPE: honor's thesis, master's thesis, or dissertation
  2. YEAR: year it was accepted by Tulane University
  3. AUTHOR
  4. VOLUME NUMBER: for older master's theses only

For most theses and dissertations, the only available copy is the preservation copy stored in the University Archives. Preservation copies may not be checked out. You may use them only in the Special Collections reading room on the second floor of Jones Hall.

Please note the following special conditions regarding your use of preservation copies in the University Archives:
  • Not all Tulane theses and dissertations are available, because not all Tulane schools and colleges deposit their theses and dissertations in the University Archives. For example, the University Archives preserves few theses or dissertations from the School of Engineering. It preserves only an incomplete set from the schools of Public Health and Social Work.
  • Sometimes recent theses and dissertations are unavailable because they are being bound and cataloged.
  • While you are welcome to read and take notes from Tulane theses and dissertations, you may not photocopy from Tulane theses and dissertations without the written permission of the author. However, copies of dissertations are available to purchase through ProQuest Dissertation Express  and many can be downloaded into your own computer (ProQuest Digital Dissertations) if you are a member of the Tulane community.
