New MeSH Strucutre for Catalogers

Speaker: Alice Jacobs, Assistant Head, Cataloging Section, National Library of Medicine

Medical catalogers learned in Spring 1998 of NLM's impending changes to subject heading practices for catalogers. NLM's goal has been to eliminate the differences between MEDLINE indexing and subject headings in bibliographic cataloging. Sinde then NLM has implemented these changes, and we are seeing the results in the records distributed by NLM. This session will address these changes in MeSH and provide us an update on the project.

Adjourn

This year the Health Sciences OCLC Users Group will be trying out a new time and a new setting for its annual meeting. Nevertheless you can still expect all the usual good information and contacts we have traditionally associated with the HSOCLCUG meetings.

HSOCLCUG will meet October 22-24, 1999 on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the South Central Chapter (SCC) of MLA. Norman is a short shuttle ride from Oklahoma City so airline connections shouldn't be a problem.

We will be staying on campus at the Sooner Hotel conveniently located on the University of Oklahoma Continuing Education Complex. The SCC web site lists the very reasonable room rates.

Meetings will be held nearby at the Oklahoma Center for Continuing Education.

The Program Committee is busy lining up speakers. Preliminary program plans include NLM's changes in MeSH for catalogers and possibly a related session on MeSH authority.

Ideas and suggestions for programs and sharing sessions will be most appreciated. Please contact any of the Program Committee members:

Mark your calendars and begin making plans to attend! Additional details will be forthcoming.
