Panel Discussion

Handling Electronic Resources Available from Aggregators

The panel includes Oliver Pesch from EBSCO Publishing, Gary Ross of The Gale Group (INFOTRAC and GALE), and Todd Fegan of Proquest Information and Learning. as well as Barbara L. Nicholls from Amigos speaking on OCLC’s Collection Sets. Bruce Abbott (John P. Isché Library, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center) will facilitate this panel discussion.

Various solutions to the problem of managing information available through full-text database aggregators will be discussed. The focus of the panel's discussion will be solutions that the vendors are providing for bibliographic description of resources available from aggregated full text database vendors. Vendors will describe their participation in technical and other solutions to the "appropriate copy" issue. They will discuss whether they provide MARC bibliographic and holdings information, whether they participate in industry wide initiatives such as OpenURL, DOI, etc., and whether they make their resources available via SFX, CrossRef, etc. They will also discuss any proprietary solutions they provide.

The goal is for attendees to come away with an understanding of the issues. Examples of issues include:

  1. The inclusion of MeSH Headings and NLM Classification in shared records.
  2. The provision of 856 links in the MARC holdings records as well as the MARC bibliographic records.
  3. Means of dealing with the frequency with which content is added and removed from a collection set.
  4. The "Universal Holdings" concept.

Information on the MEDCAT list
MEDCAT homepage

The MEDCAT list exchanges ideas related to medical cataloging provided by or for libraries and information centers in the health sciences. It provides an opportunity for technical services professionals and support staff, as well as anyone interested in the bibliographic and authority control of medical and health science resources, to participate in discussions about the standards, procedures, and developments that dictate policy.

MEDCAT is sponsored by the Health Science OCLC Users Group (HSOCLCUG) and is operated by its membership. The list posts continuing education opportunities, job vacancies, and meetings sponsored by related organizations in the field. Although not its primary purpose, the list announces HSOCLCUG meetings and updates to the HSOCLCUG Home page: http://hsoclcug.org
