Message from the President: Extending
the Cooperative, a full day seminar on New Technicalities in Technical
Services was held in New Orleans on October 28th, 2001. The HSOCLCUG
2001 meeting was held in conjunction with the Triple Chapter Meeting of
MLA in the New Orleans Hilton Riverside Hotel. This was the second meeting
that the South Central Chapter of MLA provided support for the hotel services
and accommodations for our Group's meeting. The support of the larger
group enabled our smaller organization to have a meeting without large
costs to the membership. All the speakers that participated in the program,
offered their time and expertise to our Group without compensation.
The SOM Proceedings issue is late in publication, but the issues discussed
at the HSOCLCUG October 2001 meeting are still cutting edge. Alice Jacobs
graciously provided an update on NLM Cataloging, and she has also provided
a detailed written document in support of her presentation. Alane Wilson
provided an introduction to changes in cataloging philosophy, including
the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Resources (FRBR).
Alane also offered background on the development toward the new OCLC services.
OCLC Pathfinders were enthusiastically presented by Betsy. Various solutions
to the problem of managing information available through full-text database
aggregators were discussed by our very informative group of panelists.
The Resource Sharing session addressed the DOCLINE and EFTS features that
are of extreme importance to medical libraries, along with information
and shared working experiences with ILLiad. There are OCLC Pathfinders
available on each of the sessions!
A meeting was also held during the ALA Midwinter in New Orleans in January
of 2002. This meeting focused on the medical authority efforts of our
Group. A number of the OCLC developers were on hand and participants were
able to make suggestions as to what we desired for authority support in
the new OCLC system interface and for improving the outsourcing support
for medical authorities. Our sincere thanks to all the OCLC staff who
have supported our efforts to further the discussion.
Thank you to all who provided support and guidance over the past year.
It was truly a pleasure to work with you all. Most importantly, I am excited
about the direction of our new leadership. Congratulations to Judith Dzierba
and Betsy Friesen as they continue our efforts to extend the cooperative!
Sincerely,
Mary Holt, Past-President
