1. Where can I print in the library?

There are 2 black and white laser printers, one in the Reference Area and one in the Mezzanine level computer labs. There is also a color printer in the Mezzanine level computer labs.

2. How do I print a document?

  1. From the computers in the library or on the first floor computer lab, select File, then Print. A new window will appear, click "Print".
For Adobe PDF documents select the printer icon printer on the Adobe toolbar. A new window will appear, click "Ok".
  2. Go to the print station located next to one of the two printers in the medical library or the one printer in the first floor lab. Swipe your Tulane ID card through the card swipe device mounted on the monitor.
  3. A list of print job(s) will appear. Look for the name of the computer you were using, i.e. "lab18". Select your print job using the computer's mouse.
  4. Click on the Print button. Your job will be output from the printer.
  5. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!! Click on the Log Out button to end your session. Failure to do so could result in someone else using your allocation.

3. How much does printing cost? Do students receive a printing allowance?

  • 10 cents per page for black & white printing
  • $.50 per page for color printing

Printing Allowance: Tulane medical students and basic sciences graduate students receive a 250 page printing allowance for Fall and Spring semesters and 100 pages for Summer, a grand total of 600 pages per year.

The allowance is automatically added to your Tulane ID account after you have completed registration for each semester. Print allowances allocated from the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine ARE NOT VALID in the Medical School computer labs. Faculty, staff and residents are not eligible for this allocation.

4. How do I check to see if I have a printing allowance?

If you've completed registration, you'll see the credit when you swipe your Tulane ID card at a print vending box or print station. Go to the box or print station in either the Matas Library or the Student Computing Facility (first floor of the medical school) and swipe your Tulane ID card. You should see the remaining balance of your allocation displayed. Make sure you click the Exit button when you've finished.

5. What if I don't use all my Fall semester allocation? Will my remaining balance be added to my Spring semester allocation? No, sorry. The allocations are by semester only.

6. How do I add money to my Tulane ID or buy a printing card? To add money to your Tulane ID, there is a vending machine in the library near the Reference Desk and another in the Student Computing Lab on the 1st floor. You may purchase a visitor card from those machines if you don't have a Tulane ID Card. There are directions on the machines. The machine accepts $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills. If you have any problems call x85157 or go the Medical Library Circulation Desk.

7. Does my printing credit work at other Tulane libraries/facilities? Yes.

8. Are there ways other than printing to capture information from computer workstations?
In many cases, computer output can be sent to an e-mail account or downloaded to a floppy disk. Free blank formatted disks and assistance are available from library staff at the Circulation and Reference desks.

9. What if I select and print the wrong job by mistake?
Selecting the correct print job is the user's responsibility. If you print someone else's job, your account will be debited for it.

10. What if the print quality is poor or the printer doesn't work?
Check with library staff for assistance. Users will be given re-prints for pages printed when the toner is low or there is a paper jam.

If the printer is already printing another job, please wait until it finishes before swiping your card to send your job to the printer.

11. If I change my mind about a print job already sent to the queue, do I still have to pay for it?
No. A print job is not paid for until the job is released to the printer for output. Print jobs drop automatically from the queue if they are not printed after 24 hours.

12. Can a job released to the printer be cancelled or stopped from printing?

No. Once a job is selected and released for printing, your account has already been debited and the print job cannot be cancelled.

13. Can I use my copy card for printing or vice versa? Unfortunately, No.

14. Blackboard Printing Issues:

  1. How can I get pages from Blackboard to print properly?
Blackboard course pages do not print easily or well because they were sometimes not designed for printing. Some of the printing techniques you might use at home to print frames or PowerPoint slides do not work on the library's public workstations.

You should consider printing PowerPoint slides from Blackboard only when the presentation is brief and only if it is really necessary to have the material in print form. Open the slides and click on the print icon on the tool bar OR right-click on the slide and then choose Print. When the print dialog window opens, click on OK to print. The Pharos pop-up window should then appear, and you should assign a print job name.
  2. How can I get an Adobe PDF file to print properly?
Do not choose the option to "Print as image" because your print job will be incorrectly processed. Note: PDF print jobs may print slowly especially if the file is a "scanned PDF file".

15. If I add my own money to my card, can I get a refund if I don't use all of it? Yes, but you need to issue a refund request through the Card Services web site - http://cardservices.tulane.edu/ or call 865-5629.

16. If I have any questions, where do I go for help? Ask a staff member in the computer labs or at the circulation desk of the Medical Library or email our Help expert at askrudy@tulane.edu

Have a question not addressed here? Please email ASKRUDY@TULANE.EDU and we will provide an answer as soon as possible.
