Selected List of Books Purchased New Titles (in Library Catalog) The Monographs Department is responsible for selecting book titles for purchase and then making the information on the titles in the medical collection available in the Tulane University Libraries' Online Public Access Catalog, Library Catalog. In addition, books are physically prepared for circulation by this department. There are also special projects and displays involving the Library's Special Collections which are handled by the departmental staff. One of the major ongoing projects is "Retrospective Conversion" of the pre-1988 data on the collection. Once complete, all the information currently available only in the old card catalog will be available in online catalog. Purchase of Books and Selection Electronic ResourcesThe Tulane Medical Library serves as the primary resource library for the Tulane University Health Sciences Center comprising the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, the University Hospital and Clinic, the Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research, the Regional Primate Center, and the U.S.-Japan Biomedical Research Laboratories. The library supports the teaching, research, and patient care functions of the health sciences center through the acquisition, organization, and dissemination of biomedical information. Books in both print and electronic formats are selected for the collection in support of the various academic teaching, research, and clinical care areas of the Health Sciences Center. Recommendations for purchase of new library materials may be communicated to the Monograph's Librarian. Every effort is made to purchase single copies of materials required to support the curriculum of the academic departments of the Health Sciences Center. Newly processed books are placed on the New Books Shelf at the entrance of the Medical Library. In addition recent titles may be viewed via the New Titles list for all the Tulane Libraries in TULAnet Voyager. Cataloging and Classification of BooksThe Rudolph Matas Library maintains data in the Tulane University's Online Public Access Catalog, TULANet Voyager. New books are cataloged in accordance with national standards. The Library adheres to current AACR2r descriptive cataloging practice and adds medical subject headings, (MeSH) in addition to the Library of Congress Subject headings (LCSH). National Library of Medicine Classification is used in the classification of the Library's monograph collection. Our holdings are available in the OCLC database (OCLC symbol=LTM). NOTE: Information on the older monographic holdings,(pre-1988) may not be complete in TULANet Voyager or in OCLC. The card catalog located behind the glass entrance of our library must be used currently to access information on many of the library's older publications. In addition, many of the finding aids for our special collections are available in house only at present. Online Local Guidelines
