Serials Department

What We Do

The Serials Department is responsible for the selection, purchase, check in, processing, and binding of journals. All journal titles currently received by the library are available in TULANET; however, many of the titles which have ceased publication or which the library has cancelled in previous years are not. Information on those discontinued titles is available in the last row of the card catalog.

Purchase of Journals

Journals are selected for the collection in support of the various teaching, research, and clinical care needs of the Health Sciences Center. The library currently receives approximately 1450 journal titles, split almost evenly between print and electronic. Recommendations for new acquisitions may be sent to the Serials Librarian. Decisions regarding new acquisitions are generally made in the early fall when journal subscriptions are renewed.

Cataloging and Classification of Journals

The library maintains data in TULANET, and catalogs journals in accordance with national standards adhering to current AACR2r descriptive cataloging practice and using medical subject headings, (MeSH) along with Library of Congress Subject headings. Journals are NOT classified for shelving purposes. They are shelved alphabetically by keyword in the title. Unbound issues are shelved with the bound volumes once they come off display one week after receipt. During that first week, they are housed in the Current Periodicals Room. Hold slips are available for registered library users to sign up to be notified when new issues are ready to circulate.

Binding

Most currently received journal titles are bound for preservation purposes and ease of access. It takes approximately four weeks for journals to return from the bindery. The projected return date appears in TULANET when an item is at the bindery. Holds for items being bound may be placed at the circulation desk.
