Dr. Miller is noted as a medical pioneer by demonstrating that hypothermia protects from death and brain damage during asphyxia and drowning.

In addition, Dr. Miller served as president of the Southern Society of Anatomists and organized the Cooperative Summer Teaching Program for students interested in anatomy, histology and neuroanatomy.
