At 4:28 P.M. on Thursday, May 8, 1997 the parking lot attendant in an area surface level parking lot located in the 1300 block of Cleveland Street was armed robbed by an unknown subject.
The parking attendant reported that the subject approached the parking booth and requested change for a twenty dollar bill. The subject was told by the attendant that she could not open the register unless a transaction was completed. The subject waited outside the booth until a transaction was finished. The subject returned to the attendant booth, displayed and unknown type handgun and demanded the money from the cash drawer. The subject then walked away exiting the lot on South Villere Street and then fled in an unknown direction. The subject is described as a Black Male, 20-25 years old , 5' 9"-6' 0" , slender build, 180 pounds, with a gold tooth, wearing a white t-shirt, black or blue hat, dark color jean shorts and white tennis shoes. An undetermined amount of money was taken and no injuries were reported. NOPD Eighth District Detectives are investigating the complaint.
There is a telephone scam that has been reported in New Orleans area and other parts of the country. They all have one thing in common. They ask you to call a phone number beginning with the area code of 809. You may get an e-mail advising you that you need to settle an outstanding overdue account and you need to call before legal action is started. You may also have a message on your answering machine notifying you that a family member is ill or has died or you may be told you have won a prize. In each case you are told to call the 809 number right away.
Since there are so many new area codes, people unknowingly return the calls. If you call from the U.S. you will be charged $25 per minute. Sometimes the person on the phone will speak in broken english and pretend not to understand you. Other times you may get a long recorded message. The point is they try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you will often be charged more than $100. The reason this scam works is because the 809 number is located in the British Virgin Islands. The 809 number is similar to the U.S "900" pay per call system. Since the 809 code is not in the United States it is not regulated by telephone companies. Use caution if you receive any messages with this area code number.
