We recently set the clocks forward and returned to Daylight Savings time. Even through it may not get dark until later in the evening, don't let this give you a false sense of security. June 1, was the beginning of hurricane season. For those who may be new to the area, hurricanes can be devastating. It is important to realize the damage a hurricane can cause and have a plan in effect before the hurricane hits an area. New Orleans Police Department Eighth District Crime Prevention Officer Kelly Marrione has an interesting program on hurricane safety and preparedness. This program is geared for both the new comeras well as persons who have been living in this area. Anyone interested in having this program presented to their department can. You may have noticed video cameras at various locations around the medical center complex.The closed circuit television system has assisted TUMC Police on a post incident basis. Closed circuit television cameras are provided for the purpose of gathering information for the prosecution of those persons committing vandalism or theft. These camera are not always monitored and should not be relied upon for life safety.
For those of you lucky enough to be going on vacation, TUMC Police has a handout entitled "Vacation Checklist". This brochure describes various methods you can use to safeguard your home or apartment when going on vacation. These brochures are available along with other topics andare free of charge. They can be obtained in the lobby of the medical school in front of the communication center.
For those of you who ride bicycles to work, we would like to remind you that chaining a bike to a light pole is not practicing good security. There is a lockable bike room available through the Parking Services Department and the only associated cost is the deposit of the key. We have seen an increase in the theft of bikes in recent years. For your key to the bike room, please contact Parking Service at extension 5577.
