The City that Care Forgot

We New Orleanians pride ourselves in knowing how to throw a party, with fine food, music and spirits as the starting ingredients.  Our intriguing and diverse culinary and music heritage springs forth naturally from the cultural melting pot of south Louisiana.

The Audubon Institute hosts the opening reception on Tuesday evening at the world class Aquarium of the Americas located on the east bank of the Mississippi River.  Enjoy Cajun (French-Acadian) food while viewing exhibits full of fishes of the Gulf of Mexico as well as from around the world.  Make sure you see one of the white alligators, and don’t miss the screening of the short film “Wings Over the Wetlands.”  The Aquarium of the Americas is home to more than 10,000 live fish, birds and reptiles.  The newest exhibits include the jellyfish and seahorse additions.  The “Gulf of Mexico” exhibit big tank is right out of a James Bond movie.

Join us on Thursday night for a “picnic” party at the House of Blues, replete with fine New Orleans style food and typical entertainment.  Sunpie & the Louisiana Sunspots will play zydeco music, including many of their own compositions representing diverse styles and influences from Caribbean to Mexican.  Lead singer, Bruce Barnes (a.k.a. Sunpie), is Park Ranger by day and accordion, harmonica, tambourine, bottle, and limbe drum player by night.  Zydeco is a blues-flavored style of Cajun dance music.  You are in for an uplifting, energizing evening.  For those who desire quieter surroundings to visit with old freinds, there’s plenty of space to get away from the bustle of the band.  Laissez les bon temps roulez!

The Saturday night banquet will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel.  You will feast upon local specialty dishes that have become world famous.  Appetizers include duck and mushroom hors d’oeuvres, and oyster bisque with your choice of entrée: crab cakes, prime rib or vegan, and white chocolate bread pudding for dessert.  The banquet entertainers are an all-brothers traditional Cajun band, Les Freres Michot.  They play Cajun music in the all-acoustic “bal de maison” (house dance) style, so put on your dancin’ shoes for this one.  Band member, Tommy Michot, is a research biologist and pilot for the USDI National Wetlands Research Center in Lafayette, LA, by day.
