Opportunities
Students can apply for funds from NEI
for field research in tropical America, or to attend Organization for Tropical
Studies field courses in Costa Rica. NEI serves as an information clearinghouse
for tropical field research, environmental study abroad and educational
programs.
Courses
and Symposia
Education, teaching and curriculum
development is a major activity of NEI. Popular courses introduced by NEI include The Natural History
of Mesoamerica and Health,Ecology, and Development in Latin America.
Most involve a semester on campus at Tulane, followed by field experience in
Latin America.
Recent courses include:
Population and the Environment, Conservation and Sustainable Development in
Costa Rica, Tropical Ecology, Tropical Biology.
Symposia and workshops of NEI
include: “Tropical Forest Conservation,” “Mesoamerican Biogeography,” “Fragile
Lands of Latin America: A Search for Sustainable Uses,” “The Status of
Biosphere Reserves in the Yucatan Peninsula,” and “Poverty, Disasters and the
