November
29, 2001 - February 10, 2002
New Orleans
is home to a number of important private collections of African
art. This exhibiton will present approximately 60 of the finest
pieces collected in the city over the past decade. The objects will
come from countries across the continent and will represent
a broad range of functions and materials. A full-color catalogue
accompanies the exhibition and may be purchased directly from
the Newcomb Art Gallery. To reserve a copy, please call 314-2406.
The exhibition highlights
the varied materials found in traditional African art including
gold, silver, and ivory, as well as wood, copper, iron, hair,
and feathers and also emphasizes the expert craftsmanship of the
various artists. Among the most important objects in the show
are Nok terracotta busts created two thousand or more years ago,
a large Mumuye figure, and a Baule tribal mask from the Ivory
