Biographical/Historical note
Katherine Caffery Baker (1896-1982) was a Newcomb College graduate of 1918. At both Newcomb High School and Newcomb College, Katherine excelled as a student and class leader. After her marriage to Robert Baker, she became a caretaker of several generations of family members and others who traveled to her large home on 1228 Race Street, facing Coliseum Square.
This family included large numbers of people who lived in both the rural areas of southern Louisiana and the city of New Orleans. Katherine spent her early childhood in St. Mary Parish where her family owned three plantations: a sugar plantation called Bayside, another called Haighfley, and Martha's Vineyard.
In St. Mary Parish, Katherine and her siblings rode a horse together to school. The city of New Orleans offered more educational opportunities so sometime before her high school years, the family moved to New Orleans. Her father, Donelson Caffery II, served in the state legislature and was considered a progressive. Creole of Color Rodolphe Desdunes in his book "Notre Peuple et Notre Histoire," identified Caffery as "one of our only friends in the Legislature."
Scope and Contents note
The family retained letters and other writings as part of their daily lives, and Katherine, as the inheritor of the family home, retained these materials. The collection is valuable for its insights into correspondence between men and women family members, plentiful photographs, albums, records of banking and businesses, many letters of condolence on the death of family members, telegraphs, genealogical charts and letters, newspaper clippings, a handwritten quotation book, and miscellaneous materials. The family emphasized reading, writing, and oration. The men in the family became politicians and lawyers; the women in the family became teachers, mothers, and activists. Katherine (Kit) Baker Senter, daughter of Katherine Caffery Baker, was particularly crucial to many progressive causes in the city of New Orleans in the latter half of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first.
NOTE: In boxes 16 and 17 are contact prints of photographs of Kit Baker Senter taken in the late 1940s by American photographer Toni Frissell (1907-1988). Frisell was known for work with Vogue and other women's fashion magazines, as well as war and sports photography.
