Biographical/Historical note
Lee Barnes, a 1973 graduate of Newcomb, offered the opportunity to learn cooking to countless people. She is credited with offering the first authentic cooking school in New Orleans. Ms. Barnes enlisted the help of well-known local chefs as well as internationally known favorites to teach at her school. She and her staff taught a diversity of classes. In addition to classes in New Orleans, she also taught at various events in Florida, New York, France, Bangkok and Washington D.C.
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains an array of material related to Lee Barnes's Cooking School and Gourmet Shop, her life, and her family. Ms.Barnes brought many visiting chefs to town and therefore helped elevate New Orleans into highly favorable position in terms of the culinary world. The bulk of the material consists of articles, school schedules, advertisements, event brochures and photographs. The material may be of particular interest to those researching culinary schools, recipes, and the success of small businesses in the Uptown area or Newcomb graduates.
Organization and Arrangement
The material has been placed in one storage box that organizes the material. All material has had all metal fasteners removed. All materials have been flattened. Some photographs have been placed in protective covering.
