Biographical/Historical note

Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1941, Lynda Benglis graduated from Newcomb College in 1964. That summer, she went to New York and enrolled at the Brooklyn Museum of Art School. She stayed for only one month and then broke out on her own as an artist. She quickly became a significant force in the New York art world. She first made her mark with sculptures she called Color Spills, which were inspired by Jackson Pollock's poured paintings. These sculptures of pigmented latex and polyurethane earned Lynda Benglis an invitation to the 1969 Whitney Museum of Art's "Anti-Allusion: Procedures/Materials" show, but she withdrew from at the last moment due to a dispute with the organizers. She is also famous for an ad she placed in the November 1974 issue of "Artforum" where she appeared nude, embracing an oversized dildo. This ad caused a rift in the editorial staff of the famous magazine that brought even further attention to Benglis's work. Some of her other more famous works have been the knot sculptures of the late 1970s, which were coated sprayed with liquid metal.

Scope and Contents note

"In 1995, Benglis collaborated with Master Printer, Stan Baden to produce twelve images which use the nineteenth century engravings based on Zuni hunting fetishes as their point of departure. The energy of the original fetishes and their position in society in connection with big game hunting rituals is re-engaged through Benglis' own very different and personal art-making rituals."
