Biographical/Historical note
Lindy Boggs was a member of the Newcomb graduating class of 1935. She accompanied her husband, newly elected Congressman Hale Boggs, to Washington, D.C. in 1940, where she emerged as an influential force in American politics. When Congressman Boggs disappeared in a small plane over Alaska in 1972 Lindy succeeded him, becoming the first female member of the House of Representatives from Louisiana. She went on to serve nine terms before her retirement in 1990. In 1997 she was appointed by President Clinton as ambassador to The Vatican.
