Biographical/Historical note
Mary Landrieu comes from a very political background. Her father (Moon) served as Mayor of New Orleans and later as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Her younger brother, Mitch, served in the Louisiana legislature as a representative. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana in 2004, and Mayor of New Orleans in 2010.
Mary served in the Louisiana House and was elected State Treasurer for two terms. She made an unsuccessful run for Governor and is now a U. S. Senator.
Paulette Irons first served in the Louisiana Legislature as a Representative. In 1994 she ran to fill out the Senatorial term of Marc Morial, who had been elected Mayor of New Orleans. She was successful and became only the second female African American to serve in the Louisiana Senate. She was elected to a full term in 1995 and in 1999 had no opposition to her re-election.
Irons decided to run for Mayor of New Orleans in 2001 (election in early 2002) but first she campaigned for defeat of an amendment to the city charter which would have allowed Morial (and subsequent mayors) to run for a third term.
The race had a large number of candidates. Irons was doing well in the polls until late in the race when there was a rash of negative campaigning directed primarily at Irons. She did not make it into the run-off election.
She returned to the Louisiana Senate and was re-elected in 2003.
Later in 2003 she ran for a judgeship and was elected.
Paulette Irons was a believer in community (volunteer) activities, but her biggest concern was teen-age pregnancy.
