Biographical/Historical note

Cheron Brylski was born in 1958. She graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and Political Science. Then she earned her Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of New Orleans (magna cum laude) in 1983. She began her career as a reporter for the New Orleans "Vieux Carre Courier," working under Editor William Faulkner Ruston and Publisher Philip Carter. A series of stories on poor Louisiana Native American women, written with guidance by Mr. Ruston, earned Ms. Brylski the attention of Consumer Advocate Ralph Nader. Nader invited her to work with him on a project called Congress Watch in Washington, D.C. At the height of the Oil Crisis Ms. Brylski returned to Louisiana with Mr. Nader to begin a project designed to unseat U.S. Senator Russell Long. At this time Loyola University recommended her to newly elected Mayor Ernest N. Morial, who was looking for a good writer. Mayor Morial was the city's first African American Mayor, but he directed Cheron to focus her growing political and media experience on helping women further their presence in politics and the workplace. While working for Dutch Morial, she was appointed to head a chartered city department, the Office of Public Information. She was the first woman and youngest person ever to head such a department. She served as Dutch Morial's chief speechwriter and press liaison until his death in 1989. Upon leaving city government in 1986, Cheron started her own business. Eventually, it grew into a media consulting firm specializing in government, political, and non-profit clients. Then State Representative Mary Landrieu hired Cheron in 1987 to help her become the first women elected to a state wide office. Cheron solidified her involvement in Louisiana's women's movement by taking Landrieu as a client.
