Biographical/Historical note
Emily Card, NC 1963, has maintained a longtime commitment to lobbying for equal credit access for women. As an assistant to Senator Brock of Tennessee, she was the author of the Equal Credit Act; she also worked with HUD to assure equal access to housing. As a professor at the University of Southern California, she researched state and federal credit information. Later, she continued her expertise in the area of finance and credit as a financial columnist for Ms. Magazine, a cable television talk show host, and an author. She was the host of "It's Your Money," a show on Lifetime television, emphasizing women's finances. She has written a number of books, including "Staying Solvent," written as a credit guide for women, and "The Ms. Money Book."
Emily Card, a nationally-recognized author and attorney, has authored or co-authored seven consumer finance books, among them the best-selling Consumer Reports Money Book, Business Capital for Women and The Ms. Money Book. She landed her first paid writing position at age 16 with a column about her local high school in the town newspaper. Her work on the passage of the federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act led her to focus on consumers, women and money.
She has written for many publications, including Working Woman, Ms. Magazine (contributing editor) and Self, as well as having been a regular columnist on several Internet sites. USA Today noted that Card was the “first female financial host on television” with her “It’s Your Money,” a 26-part series on LIFETIME. Card holds advanced degrees from Columbia University, the University of California at Los Angeles, Harvard University and Tulane University and a B.A. from Newcomb College. Card maintains a national law and consulting practice, and she has served on several boards. She also has served as a professor of law, business and politics at major universities.
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains material on a broad range of subjects (1966-2000). The bulk of the material consists of working files for books, magazine articles, television shows, and academic and government research that involved Emily Card. The material might be of particular interest to those researching the United States' policies on women's financial credit, the women's movement in 1970-2000, and Ghana.
Organization and Arrangement
The material has been placed in storage containers that correspond to the boxes the material was received in. All attempts have been made to preserve original order. All material has been refoldered and some metal fasteners have been removed. Much of the material was received arranged in three-ring folders. This material was removed and placed in folders. If the material in the three-ring folder required more than one folder, the folders were labeled with the same heading and renumbered.
