Biographical/Historical note
Although she lived much of her life away from Louisiana, Ceballos defines herself as a Louisiana woman. She was born in Mamou, Louisiana and received her B.A. in Music and Spanish at University of Southwestern in Lafayette, Louisiana. After college she went to New York to start a career as an opera singer. She abandoned this in order to raise a family with her husband in Bogota, Columbia. Later she formed and led an opera company there; its success made her husband feel very threatened. After reading The Feminine Mystique in 1967, Michot recognized how sexism was affecting her life. She moved to New York City and became involved in the women’s movement through the National Organization for Women, in which she soon became an indispensable member. Over the next decade she held many positions within this organization, including Public Relations Officer, President of the NYC chapter (1971), Eastern Regional Director (1972), and delegate to the International Women’s Year Conference (1975). She represented NOW in many public appearances, including television programs, radio interviews, speeches, and even in the famous Town Bloody Hall (April 1971). In addition she was involved in many other Feminist-oriented businesses and projects, including the New Feminist Talent Collective, the New Feminist Talent Collective, the New Feminist Theatre, and the Theatre of Women’s Liberation. After hearing Rush Limbaugh call feminists "feminazis" and the loss of the Equal Rights Amendment, Ceballos founded Veteran Feminists of America to help assure that feminist activists would be honored forever, as are soldiers of bloody wars, and so that feminist pioneers would continue to help the movement (see www.vfa.us).
Scope and Contents note
This material was collected by Ceballos during her involvement in the women’s movement in New York City between 1967 and 1979. Included are books, educational materials, clippings, articles, early issues of “Aphra,” many newsletters of NOW and other organizations, preview copies of “Our Bodies, Ourselves,” and several recordings of important events. Also included are Ceballos’s personal files, which contain many fliers, pamphlets, reports, correspondence, information on several topics and individuals, and business material. Items that were removed include several photographs of Ceballos and another, unknown woman, and an oversized poster.
The ephemeral and personal information in the collection is particularly valuable as documentation of the “second wave” of feminism, during the late 1960s and through the 1970s.
