Biographical/Historical note

A professor of English at Tulane University, Joseph Cohen divided his time between the English Department and the university as a whole. From 1961 to 1976 he served as Associate Dean of Newcomb College. Cohen was active in the development of new programs. He worked towards the foundation of the Honors Program, the Newcomb Women’s Center, and the Jewish Studies Program, of which he was director from 1981 to 1987.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains records from Joseph Cohen’s files from 1957 to 1988. It is primarily materials from various committees on which he served, among them the Curriculum Committee, the Newcomb Dean Search Committee (1986-87), and the Advanced Standing Committee. Although the Honors Program houses Cohen’s files on the honors program, this collection includes files on the Southern Honors Symposium (1970), the National Collegiate Honors Council (1969-75), and the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Competition.

This collection also includes three sessions of an interview with Dr. Cohen in 1991 on three videocassettes. In these interviews one finds worlds of rich personal material that is inaccessible in the professional files. These personal recollections, which linger a great deal on his childhood, illuminate various themes in his life. These included his grandparents, struggling Jewish immigrants in Tennessee and Kentucky; growing up Jewish in the South; his discovery and pursuit of literature study; and his participation in the military and its effect on his work.

The files have been alphabetized according to the labels on the original file folders, in order to approximate the original order of the materials. Also included in the collection are a few financial ledgers and three videotapes of an interview with Dr. Cohen in 199?
