Biographical/Historical note

The Concerned Citizens Committee (CCC) of Grand Lake was formed in 1986 in order to combat Big Diamond Trucking Company, Incorporated, and its plans to build a land farm in the Grand Lake, Louisiana community. Since 1979, Big Diamond had operated a dumping site in Grand Lake, Louisiana, which included waste pits and injection wells. This site was located next to the community’s only school and recreation center, whose water quality was deeply affected by the dumping site’s lax regulation of polluted chemicals. Big Diamond announced plans to draw up a land farm across from the original site, which spurred many community members- including the creator of this resource, Janice Crador- into action. Original CCC members included Robert and Janice Crador, Harold and Lavonna Delaney, Hugh and Beverly Delaney, Nathan and Bea Demarest, Morgan and Melba Fault, Terry and Becki Gauthier, George and Bernice Greathouse, Paul and Nanette Kline, Thelma “Petie” LaBove, Harley and Audrey Matte, Pete and Ruth Nunez, Harold and Margie Savoie, Mike and Carol Savoy, Noble and Pauline Theriot, and L.J. and Bobbie Thomas. Many of their adult children and their spouses joined the committee, including eight members of the George Greathouse family. With the help of lawyer Willie Fontenot, the CCC managed to petition the neighborhood and gather signatures against Big Diamond, as well as discover evidence that the company’s detoxification procedures were lacking and that some community conservation officials were corrupt. In the face of this evidence, Big Diamond was ordered to shut down production on its new facility, but the old one still operated as usual, right next to the school.
