Biographical/Historical note
Pat Denton, a Louisiana feminist and activist, worked for many years at the Regional Planning Commission for Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard, and St. Tammy Parishes.
Her collection spans the years 1972 to 1990 and concerns her work with the Louisiana Women’s Political Caucus. For this group, she served first as the Chair of the State Public Information Committee and then as President from 1982 to 1983. Some of Denton’s accomplishments while involved with the Caucus include the creation of recruitment plans, brochures, and a leadership manual. She also edited the newsletter and provided its photography.
Scope and Contents note
The scope of the collection represents, in a broad sense, women’s issues during the years between 1972 and 1986. Pat Denton’s collection consists of her notes, correspondence, and newspaper clippings of the following issues and organizations: the ERA movement, the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Louisiana Women’s Political Caucus, the National Organization for Women, and many feminist newspapers.
Two projects supervised by Denton are also documented: the ERA’s “New Day and Jazz Funeral Celebration”, which took place on July 3, 1982, and New Orleans Women in Cable’s video production of “Feminist! Are You One?”, which took place in 1986, most of which have been transcribed. Both projects grew from Denton's work as president of New Orleans Women in Cable (1984-1986), which changed its name to New Orleans Women in Video in 1986. Many of the videos are included in the collection. Denton inventoried and transcribed most (if not all) of these videocassettes; her list can be found in FOLDER C-3. Also included in the collection are four audiocassettes, recordings of NOW events in the early 1980s; they have been relocated to the Oral History Collection in the box labeled “Ecc." Interviews for these productions include activists such as Rupert Richardson, Mary Landrieu, Kim Gandy, etc.
Organization and Arrangement
The collection consists of 4 cartons, 7 boxes, and 3 oversized boxes

General note
*Used to have accession numbers 94-019, 94-0120 – because the collection needed further processing after another addition by Pat Denton, we gave it a new accession number. The collection also had to be re-boxed, see individual boxes for their old collection numbers.
