Biography
Florence Dymond graduated from Newcomb in 1891.
"A native of New York state, she was raised on a plantation in Braithewaite, after coming to New Orleans with her father, John Dymond, a leading sugar planter and one-time publisher of The Sugar Journal. ... In 1922 she was appointed a member of the board of administrators of Tulane University, becoming the first woman ever named to that body. She was appointed emeritus member of the board in 1951. Miss Dymond was named an honorary Phi Beta Kappa for organizing the Newcomb Alumnae Association. She was a founder of the New Orleans Dispensary for Women and Children, now Sara Mayo hospital, and a founding member of the Orleans Club" [obituary, The Times-Picayune, 21 Feb. 1962, p. 4 c. 4].
She died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 1962 at age 89 after an illness of 15 years, "daughter of the late Nancy Cassidy and John Dymond, Sr., aunt of Helen Dymond Chamberlain," Frances, William, Jr. and F. Irvin Dymond, all of New Orleans, and William Dymond Benedict of Meridian, Connecticut [obituary, The Times-Picayune, 21 Feb. 1962, p. 2 c. 6].
A large Bio-Reference file in the NA NCCROW attests to her continued affiliation with Newcomb as a member of the board of Administrators of Tulane University (e.g., 1924). Information about her family is detailed in a letter to President Dinwiddie (6 March 1933), in which Dymond lists factual errors regarding her brother John Jr. that appeared in the Tulane News Bulletin 13.3 (December 1932). Dymond served as the secretary-treasurer and executive manager of The American Printing Company, Ltd. (535-537 Poydras St., New Orleans), of which her brother was president. Her correspondence with Esmond Phelps, President of Tulane Board of Administrators, regarding bidding process for printing the Jambalaya still survives. Also extant correspondence (Sept. 5, 1950) indicates Dymond gave the Tulane library a Plantation Record book and her father's manuscripts regarding the lives of sugar planters.
