Biographical/Historical note
A jewelry designer since 1970, Mignon Faget designs, produces, sells, and ships her creations from a century-old Victorian barge board cottage by the levee in New Orleans. Coming from a family with strong New Orleans roots, Mignon stayed at home and graduated from Newcomb in 1955. She proceeded to further her art study at prestigious schools such as l'Atelier La Grand Chaumier, Dominican College, and New York's Parsons School of Design. Mignon's career began to take off in 1967-68, when she debuted small collections of clothing for two New Orleans stores. This success was followed in 1970, when Mignon designed and made her first piece of jewelry. Soon enough, her sophisticated and contemporary look had established a loyal following both in New Orleans and nationwide. Mignon's pieces have been featured in Vogue, Gentleman's Quarterly, Glamour, Harper's Bazaar, and Mademoiselle. Recently, Mignon designed jewelry for Newcomb: an oak tree pin, acorn earrings, tuxedo studies, and cufflinks, as well as an acorn ring. All of these elegant works are inspired by the oak tree that has come to symbolize Newcomb College. Mignon Faget presently resides in Uptown New Orleans with her daughter and two sons.
Scope and Contents note
The collection consists primarily of records pertaining to the sale of Mignon Faget's Newcomb-inspired jewelry from 1980 to 1990. Examples of these records include general cash receipts, wholesale order forms, jewelry order forms, invoices, and UPS charges. Because the sale of this jewelry line was done in conjunction with the Newcomb Alumni Association, many of the records have been processed by Barbara Smith.
Organization and Arrangement
Papers have been placed in acid-free folders. The folder titles have been taken from the approximate organization of the letters as they were received. See memorabilia collection, fabrics-cocktail dress.
