Biographical/Historical note
Arthemise Goertz led an adventurous life. After graduating from Newcomb, she traveled extensively throughout Mexico. Afterwards she wrote her first of five published books, "South of the Border," based upon her experiences there. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s Arthemise Goertz wrote travel articles for numerous magazines. In 1939 she won a scholarship to study in Japan. When the United States entered the war in 1941, Goertz and her mother were placed under house arrest. Goertz had the peculiar experience of being an enemy in Japan while being lucky enough to see the population in its own environment, instead of through the bars of a concentration camp like other civilian internees. After returning to the United States on the U.S.S Gripsholm in 1943, she and her mother settled in Flushing, New York. Here she published "Give Us Our Dream," a New York Times best seller. She later returned to Louisiana, living in family homes in both Mandeville and New Orleans. In the 1950s she married Charles Roome and lived with him for some time in St. Louis. She continued her writing career, but never achieved the same level of success that "Give Us Our Dream" attained. In 1971 Goertz made a return trip to Japan, visiting with friends she made during the war. Well into her eighties, Goertz traveled extensively and continued with attempts to publish her books.
Scope and Contents note
This collection spans the entire life of Arthemise Goertz. The bulk of the material describes her experiences as a civilian internee in Japan from 1941-1943. This comprises a separate series within the overall collection. Goertz made extensive and detailed notes about many of the topics on which she wrote; she also collected numerous photographs.
Of special historical note are property contracts from the late 1800s and instructions given the passengers on the repatriation ship the U.S.S. Gripsholm after Japan's surrender. For the researcher interested in methods of writing, Goertz kept notes, manuscripts, proofs, and galleys that should be of much help.
An interview and transcript with two of Goertz's benefactors is held in the Newcomb Authors collection.
Organization and Arrangement
The material has been arranged into a general collection and a Japanese collection.

General note
It is possible to further separate a Mexican collection from the general collection. It may be of benefit to do so for future researchers. At this time, there exists an untitled novel and notes that could easily be identified as one of Ms. Goertz published novels. Also, much of the collection needs to be photocopied onto acid free paper within the next year. At the present time, all newsprint is interleaved. Proofs should eventually be straightened out and laced in an oversized box when more space is added to the Archives. The untitled novel in box 11 should be identified. It could possibly be "New Heaven, New Earth."
An inventory and reference file are held in the repository. It may also help to look in the Newcomb Authors Collection for an interview with Robert Beaumont and Tony Durocher. A transcription of this should be done in the fall of 1995.
