Biographical/Historical note

Emile Russel Dietrich Griffin was a member of the Newcomb class of 1957. Emile worked as a marketing consultant for the Better Business Bureau and several New York City advertising agencies before returning to New Orleans. In New Orleans, she became an executive at a marketing, advertising and public relations firm; she also became involved with Loyola's Institute for Ministry, the New Orleans Archdiocese's educational television programming, and organizations related to local tourism. Griffin earned an MA in Theology from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. From 1971 on she wrote and published work which reflects her seemingly diametric interests in business and spirituality, including: "Grappled with Hoops of Steel: The Story of a Christian Friendship;” "Clinging: The Experience of Prayer;” “Turning: Reflections on the Experience of Conversation;” and “The Reflective Executive.”

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains material on a broad range of subjects from 1920 to 1992. Correspondence between Eula P. Breidenbach, Helen Dietrich, Lucy Russell, Emilie Griffin, and William Griffin reveals a richly textured family and intellectual life. In addition it includes genealogical material, especially memoirs; the memoirs date from much earlier, in one case 29 generations. Memoirs of particular note include Eula P. Breidenbach’s memoirs, which depict her family's life on a Louisiana plantation and in New Orleans. The working and writing lives of Emilie Griffin and Helen Dietrich are also well represented. They provide insight into the women's lives, creativity, and how they balanced daily task and family. Published and unpublished works are both included. Examples include plays by Emilie and William Griffin and poems, novels, and other material by Emilie Griffin. Other interesting materials include reflections on the lives of Christian Scientists and Roman Catholics. The work of Helen Dietrich in the Garrison/Shaw trial regarding the assassination of President Kennedy is also particularly illuminating. The processor notes contain a family tree by Sarah Griffin that can be used as an identification aid.
