Biographical/Historical note

Julie Schwam Harris was extremely active in the Pro-Choice movement in Louisiana. In the years following Roe v. Wade there were many attempts in many parts of the country to ignore its dictates with respect to a woman’s control of her body.

Louisiana was among those where the Legislature sought to effectively overturn Roe by passing many restrictions to make it virtually impossible for a woman to terminate a pregnancy with a medical procedure..

Operation Rescue, a national group firmly opposed to pregnancy termination, targeted Louisiana to protest at the Women’s Health Centers they suspected of performing abortions. They had extremely aggressive tactics and physically harassed center staff and, in some cases, the pregnant women. At least one person was murdered by someone professing to be Pro-Life.

Harris saved accounts of Pro-Choice and Pro-Life activities from all over the country. There is a treasure chest of newspaper and magazine articles in these files.

The legislative activities in Louisiana are also thoroughly documented and include the many bills proposed and voting records.
