Biographical/Historical note
Sadie Irvine was one of the most influential artists to emerge from and sustain the Newcomb Pottery program. She Graduated from Newcomb College in 1906 and went on to become an Art Craftsman until 1929. She later taught pottery design, embroidery, watercolor, drawing, design, bookplating, and blockprinting at Newcomb until her retirement in 1952. Throughout her education and career, Sadie Irvine maintained close ties with Ellsworth Woodward and the rest of the New Orleans art community. A loyal New Orleanian and active artist, Sadie Irvine continued to teach art even after her retirement at The Academy of the Sacred Heart. She was well-known for her independent approach to craftsmanship and exquisite natural talent.
