Biographical/Historical note

Jill Jackson (the stage name of Alice Schwartz) is a New Orleans native and a Newcomb Graduate. She began her entertainment career in 1941, becoming a respected "feminine" sportscaster. Eventually, Jackson also became famous as a Hollywood correspondent. She met and interviewed many Hollywood celebrities, leading her to become a local celebrity in her own right.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains the personal clippings and memorabilia from Jill Jackson's long career as a New Orleans' reporter and entertainer. There are photographs, newspaper clippings (starting in 1936), awards, film negatives, books, scripts of stories for Jackson's sports segment, letters, and tapes of stories and interviews. There are copies of several books about Jackson, including her autobiography, as well as books and book manuscripts that Jackson wrote.

1) One 12.5" x 16.5" scrapbook: Black and white photographs capturing the career of Jill Jackson at WWL with colleagues, some publicity pictures, newspapers and other clippings, and handwritten comments. Covers time period circa 1945-1954.

2) One 12.5" x 13.5" scrapbook: Newspaper clippings and black and white photographs covering Jill Jackson's (then Alice Isaacs) involvement with Le Petit Theatre and her lead roles. Newspaper clippings and photos of Jill Jackson's coverage of golf tournaments. Scrapbook covers time period circa 1936-1939.

1) LP record (33.3 rpm) labeled "WSMB - FM New Orleans, NBC Affiliate/ Title: Jill Jackson- Last Program for Jackson Brewing Co., 7-2-48," in brown sleeve

2) "Of Time and Chase: The World As Depicted by New Orleans' Distinguishes Editorial Cartoonist," by Edison B. Allen (First Edition, published by The Habersman Corporation, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1969): Hardcover book about the famous New Orleans cartoonist. Autographed copy by John Chase, addressed to Jill Jackson with a caricature and dated December 1969. Book sleeve is worn at the spine and torn along the back cover. Inside the book is a typed letter from John Chase to Jill Jackson.

3) Red folder, glossy finish with "M Butterfly" written in white letters on the front cover. Handwritten in black ink marker is "Whaddy Raw (illegible)-Quiz Show 40-'s": Contains newspaper articles, and black and white photographs dating from the 40's (with one photo dated in the 60's). Some photographs have handwritten labels and dates at the back, others do not. Many photos were taken at the "Whaddya Know?" series sponsored by Jax Brewery.

4) Off white manila folder labeled "Mardi Gras": Black and white photos, unlabeled, undated, showing scenes of Mardi Gras floats going by the WWL-TV stage.

5) Off white "Alfred A. Knopf" folder containing black and white photographs: Black and white photos, most unlabeled and undated (but those dated go back to the 1950s). They depict Jill Jackson with different people.

1) Stacks of loose pages were found in a box. They are mixed but mostly come from multiple copies of Jill Jackson's manuscripts "A Bouquet of Belles" and "Whaat! And Leave Show Business"

2) Cardboard box labeled "Travels with Twerpie" and "Copies of Twerpie--Kid's Book": Contains several copies of the manuscript "Travels with Twerpie or The Adventure of Anthony Polonius Lepidoptera, Jr.," by Jill Jackson

3) Several 8" x 10" black and white photographs of Jill Jackson when she was working at WWL

4) Negative films in transparent sleeves. They are unlabeled but some of them are probably negatives for the unclassified photographs found in the same box.
