Biographical/Historical note
Felicia Schornstein Kahn was born July 11, 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received her B.A. from Newcomb College in 1948. From 1966-1969, Kahn served as President of the New Orleans League of Women Voters. She was a lobbyist for the ERA in the Louisiana Legislature throughout the 1970s. Kahn helped to organize the National Women's Political Caucus to elect women to the Democratic National Convention in 1972. She was an elected member to the Louisiana Democratic State Central Committee. In 1973 she lobbied to include women's rights in the constitution at the Louisiana Constitutional Convention. She ran for a seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1975 and 1979, but lost both races. In 1976 Kahn served both as a Louisiana Representative to the Democratic National Convention and as chair of the National Women's Political Caucus of New Orleans. She was a member of the Commission for the International Women's Year and a workshop chair of the Lousiana Women's Conference in 1977. In 1978 she was a delegate to the United States International Women's Year Conference. Today she is an active member of the revived Louisiana Women's Political Caucus and many other organizations.
Scope and Contents note
The collection contains information regarding Felicia Kahn's political activities and campaigns in New Orleans and Louisiana dating from the 1940s to the 1980s. However, the bulk of the collection dates from 1960-1989. Especially helpful to the researchers are her notes on clippings and political ephemera. The boxes also hold information about Felicia Kahn, her National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) involvement, and her achievements as a listing agent.
Organization and Arrangement
The collection is organized into 15 boxes. All attempts were made to preserve the original order of the documents. The original file folders were replaced with acid-free folders, and all metal fasteners were removed.
