Biographical/Historical note

Margaret Strange Klapper was the daughter of a prominent New Orleans physician, and became herself a very successful doctor and medical researcher. She graduated from Newcomb College in 1935, and from Tulane Medical School in 1939. She completed a residency and internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and was certified to practice medicine in South Carolina and Alabama. Her greatest contribution to the field of medicine was the creation of the Medical Information Service via Telephone (MIST), which allowed Alabama residents to communicate with doctors throughout the state. Dr. Klapper equally contributed to the academic community and was a prolific writer and researcher. She published many scientific papers, was a proponent of continuing medical education, and wrote an auto-biographical reflection of her personal life and career (See Y-2). Dr. Klapper was well-respected and acknowledged within the institutions which were central to her career, such as the University of Alabama and Tulane University. Dr. Klapper was passionate about improving people’s health, and remained active in the medical community until she passed away in 2007. Numerous scholarships are named in honor of her and her husband and their contributions to the University of Alabama.
