Biographical/Historical note

Elizabeth Lansing, raised and educated in New Orleans, graduated from Newcomb in 1934 with a B.A. in Greek and a minor in Philosophy. The following year she proceeded her graduated studies in Mills College in California, where she received an M.A. in Philosophy. Then followed two decades of moving about: she moved to Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York City while involved in various occupations. In 1955 she made a final move to North Carolina, where she completed an M.A. in Zoology at Duke University in 1960. Her last years of employment were spent in the Rare Book Collection of the University of North Carolina Library. She was employed there until in 1985, when she had reached the state's mandatory age limit and was forced into retirement. Ms. Lansing has been a strong advocate for women's issues, particularly abortion rights, health care, and education.

Scope and Contents note

This collection spans from the early 1950s to the mid 1990s. Most of the material consists of correspondence from Ms. Lansing addressed to personal friends and acquaintances. Ms. Lansing has dedicated significant amounts of time to abortion-rights groups and she often combines in her correspondence personal news with literature from these activities. Included are also notes from her Newcomb class reunion in 1984 for their 50th anniversary and from her trips to the U.S.S.R. and Greece. As Ms. Lansing indicates in one of her letters, she has been "realistically concerned for public, egalitarian education, health care, and civil liberties."
