Biographical/Historical note
Mona Mailhes attended Ursuline Academy and graduated from Newcomb College in 1949. She attended summer school at Columbia University in 1957. She was a teacher, usually in elementary school, and retired from the Orleans Parish School system in the mid-1980s. After about a year’s break Mona then taught at St. Francis of Assisi School from 1989–1995 as a reading specialist on the Orleans Parish School system payroll. After retirement Mona became active as a volunteer in various community organizations.
Mona's father, Pete Mailhes, was a coach at Alcee Fortier High School in New Orleans and was inducted into the Tulane Football Hall of Fame.
Scope and Contents note
This collection (1935-2005) concerns the life of Mona Mailhes, a New Orleans teacher who graduated from Newcomb College. The collection is rich in materials about teaching (especially the teaching of reading), student life at Newcomb College in the 1940s, and Mailhes family history. There are many scrapbooks and numerous slides and photographs included.

She kept extensive scrapbooks of photos of her pets, as well as medical information about them. One of her cats “wrote” a book about the values of difference. After she retired Mona became active in various volunteer activities in the community. This box continues with information about library gifts. It also has memorabilia from her various volunteer activities. This box contains the original scrapbook (divided into four folders) dating back to 1949 when Mona began teaching. The pages are very fragile and large pieces have broken off. It is recommended that they not be handled unless absolutely necessary. The booklets, flyers, fronts and backs of photos, letters, notes, etc. have all been copied and are in Carton 8, NAC 515. |
